Cold Spring Harbour

In the mid 1800s, Cold Spring Harbor supported a fleet of whaling vessels. It became a United States Port of Entry in 1799. Main Street features whaling era buildings. The area code for Cold Spring Harbor is 631, except where noted.

Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum
Main St., Rte. 25A. Features fully equipped 19th Century whaleboat, family activity room, whaling implements, paintings, scrimshaw and ship models. The current exhibit, “Pirates,” runs through Labor Day, 2008. Open year-round, Tues.-Sun., 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving, Dec. 25. Fee. (367-3418)

Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium
Nassau/Suffolk border at Rtes. 25A & 108. Environmental education center and demonstration hatchery. Open daily year-round, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Easter Sunday. Two buildings with tanks and aquariums, eight outdoor tanks. Largest collection of native freshwater fish, turtles and amphibians in the state. Fee. (516-692-6768)

Dolan DNA Learning Center
334 Main St. & Rte. 25A. The educational arm of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the world’s first bio-technology museum, features a multimedia presentation on LI’s history and heritage, Mon.- Fri., 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and Sat., noon-4 p.m. Call for holiday hours. (516-367-5170)
