Welcome to the Long Island
Heritage Trail….

Stretching along Long Island’s North Shore, Route 25A originated in the early 1700s as “Kings Highway.” President George Washington traveled this same route in a 1790 horse-drawn carriage tour, on a mission to thank his Long Island supporters and spy ring for their help in winning the American Revolution. Honoring this Presidential journey, Route 25A from Great Neck to Port Jefferson is now known as the Long Island Heritage Trail.

You can travel the same Presidential route on a journey that includes early 1900s Gold Coast mansions at the western end of the trail, and 17th Century farmhouses in the east. The eastern end of the trail winds through Smithtown, Stony Brook and Setauket, considered the best historically preserved portion of Route 25A. This is where you can see a number of sites that Washington encountered on his own journey more than two centuries ago.

Use this publication as a handy guide to visiting the major attractions and historical sites along the Long Island Heritage Trail, where history awaits discovery. Expand your adventure into a weekend at many featured lodging properties.
